Family of four and I'm a native new yorker. Lived in Maine for vi&1/ii years and may exist relocating to Oswego. Don't know anything about that far Upstate. I've been as far as Kingston and Woodstock merely not to alive. Can't expect to get closer to the city but would like to maintain that suburban-ish/rural-ish feel. What are the towns surrounding Oswego that are ideal for this blazon of relocation? I'grand mostly interested in heart schoolhouse and highschools with more to offer my children than what they take here.
I'm deplorable if I sound a flake jaded, but this has been the most difficult affair I've ever done, adjusting to life in rural ME, coming from Manhattan, NYC. Later on more than five years, we're looking outside of Maine and Oswego is an choice just again, I don't want to feel isolated and 1/2 a day away from the urban center. Help, anyone? Whatever and all would be profoundly appreciated.

Default Oswego Expanse

Oswego is a relatively small city (pop ~19,000). Yous can probably find a fleck of the statistics on wikipedia. I currently teach in the Oswego City School Commune and in my own opinion we have a good schoolhouse system (though I am of course a bit bias). Exterior of Oswego, I would non recommend school districts in the immediate surrounding communities. They tend to exist not as well funded and do non offer equally much as Oswego.

You may desire to consider living outside of Syracuse in the Liverpool/Clay expanse. Suburban housing is very affordable (relatively speaking). It is only well-nigh a 35 minute commute from Oswego. As far equally schools go, districts such every bit Liverpool and Cicero North Syracuse are definitely good districts. Existence near Syracuse will definitely give you a little more of that metropolitan feeling. If y'all alive in Oswego, you will finish upward driving to Syracuse quite often for malls and entertainment anyway. Hope this helps, let me know if yous have any other questions.

What made yous pick Oswego?

Oswego is nice, just most of it is rural and information technology receives the nigh snow in Upstate NY.

If you get just south of Oswego County over the border into Onondaga County, it is more than suburban, less isolated, with better schools and l% less snow.

1. Snow: Oswego gets lots of lake result snow and sees over 160 inches each year. The northern suburbs of Syracuse... similar Liverpool, Baldwinsville, Cicero or Dirt receive much less snowfall, roughly 115 inches. Simply south of the New York Superhighway even less, around 100 inches. Camillus and Skaneateles probably average nearly 90 inches of snow.

2. Schools: Onondaga County's suburban schools offer more than than the more rural Oswego County schools. Most of the suburban schools are higher rated too.

iii. Isolation: I'chiliad non certain if you're annihilation like me, but I feel an emptiness and a loneliness in rural areas where there is petty activity or a big population base surrounding me. For case, when visiting my relatives in Elmira, NY...I can't look to get back home since it feels too pocket-sized and isolated there. The just places that do not brand me experience isolated in Upstate NY are the suburbs of Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Albany. Fifty-fifty some neighborhoods in the inner cities of Upstate cities experience depressing and isolating since many inner cities take less going on in them than their suburbs.

I'thousand not sure what type of community y'all are seeking.....though I have feeling that if you are not happy with rural places in Maine, you'll feel the aforementioned about rural places in Upstate NY. I suggest visiting the suburbs effectually Syracuse like Baldwinsville. There are many places around Syracuse that wait rural, but are in fact growing suburbs. Those places may be a better option for y'all than isolated rural towns...

Oswego has a relatively large state college in information technology then that gives it a flake of a college town atmosphere.

Although it is a very nice surface area, from your posts I don't recollect you would like information technology. Oswego is very rural. I would recommend that you lot visit it before you make a determination to motion there. I have a friend with children in the local school and they have had some problems with it being rather political.
From the data you provided I would suggest you look in the Syracuse or Watertown area. Both are smaller cities. In Syracuse you tin can observe the sububran areas y'all were talking about and in Watertown y'all tin can find the more rural areas.

Hither is a video that appeared today which explains that the Oswego expanse received more than three anxiety of snow on Monday.

I remember that at about this time a year ago, the Oswego area received a tremendous corporeality of snowfall. Information technology appears that the Oswego surface area receives very large amounts of lake-issue snowfall every yr.

Therefore, what is bonny about living in the Oswego area, with all the snow that the area receives every winter? I can understand living in snowy regions in or almost the mountains, like Colorado, Utah, or Vermont, where one can become skiing every day. However, it does non announced that Oswego is close to mountains, so one cannot ski unless it is cross-country skiing.

Considering it is home. They abound up there and are used to the snow. Folks in Oswego put up with four months (December, Jan, Feb, March) of heavy snowfall just like folks in deserts put up with four months of intense oestrus.

Lots of outdoor activities too. Hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling are very popular in Oswego County. They have Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, the Oswego River, and the Salmon River for line-fishing. The Salmon River is a World Class Fishery know for their Steelhead Trout and Salmon. More than 340 miles of state-designated snowmobile trails are in Oswego County.

In addition, land is cheap in Oswego County.

Everyone who mentions snow is absolutely right! They get hammered and are getting it as I write. Last year at this fourth dimension nosotros were in Vegas and everyone (and I mean anybody) we spoke to asked us if we knew were Oswego was b/c upstate NY was making the national news for snow fall; hope you like it. On the plus side, there are some very nice people in that location! When our kids played highschool football, our teams would beat them badly but there was never anamosity or poor sportsmanship that often goes with the territory. At that place is likewise an First-class Italian resturant well-nigh the loftier school called Canolini'south (something like that) and the people were very acomodating. One last thing I know from personal experience. The have had an ex-
cellent college wrestling team since the rock ages when I competed against them. Do your research. Manhatten is a unlike planet from Oswego. Best, Lou

You lot'll find that Oswego is very close to what yous may accept encountered in a New England port city. The schools are expert and there are tons of activities for kids. It is also a safe and inexpensive place to live. There are customs groups and if yous become involved yous should be fine. Stores are limited, though sufficient, and the higher does provide some diversion.

If you need to be near a mall it might not be right for yous. At that place are also no jobs to speak of. It is a good five hours or more than to NYC and that is traveling through two other states (PA & NJ) to get in that location by the quickest route with no traffic. There are few NYC transplants every bit you would discover in Vermont or the Hudson region. Most people here are either heart class or poor with the criminal offense rate existence negligible and customs spirit relatively high. There is quite a bit of snow but the lake and the balance of the year, non to mention the central location to all sorts of wondeful places, more than make up for it. Information technology is also a highly walkable city with no bad areas to speak of.
